What free will

I was thinking – and yes many times I have been told that decent Americans do not think. They just follow the idiots from the right wing. But I’m an indecent American. I love to think. I love philosophy in its original sense: Love of wisdom.

Anyway, either behavior is caused or is uncaused. If it is uncaused then where is free will?

So let’s say all behavior or at least free willed behavior is caused, from where do the causes come?

I can only think four possible causes:

  1. Nature – your genes….
  2. Nurture – your environment….
  3. Your soul….
  4. The Spirit – God, Infinite Intelligence,

OK I’m not sure how you select your genes, or your environment (for now – a Karma based theory later on)….

And as far as the Spirit is concerned there again you cannot change it so I’m not sure how that contributes to your free will….

Finally comes your soul. If you had no choice in selecting your soul whenever you got it and from then on everything was a matter of cause and effect based on nature and nurture your current soul is in fact dependent an infinite or near infinite series of causes and effects.

So if you are still with me (it’s fully logical but difficult to follow even for me) it is impossible for us to have free will and yet it feels as though we have it. Is it only an illusion?

A lot of brain science research shows that it is only an illusion – but it is a damned good illusion….

The mind boggles – as I started this post thinking is bad for you and thinking too much is very bad for you and I suppose this (thinking about free will) is by definition thinking too much….

And let’s say I’m write and free will is only a big cosmic joke, then I’m predestined to write this post:

Wrong!

It is not a question of free will vs. predestination but a question of problem solving (unconscious cognition) in real time. It is not as though I’m not writing this post or I had no choice but to write it. It is a question of do I (the conscious ego) know what I’m doing. Am I (the conscious ego) in charge or perhaps I’m an observer of the ultimate virtual reality game (this virtual reality is called reality or better still consensus reality).

Perhaps this is just a movie that I’m watching. It is so realistic that I get so much into it that I imagine I’m in charge….

Which reminds me the statement we used to say in the sixties: “Reality is with those who can’t cope with drugs.”
