One great way to overcome your ego&#8217;s need to be right is to tell yourself whenever you notice negative emotions tell yourself, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be so petty.&#8221;</p>
<p>Think about what you are observing in the here and now from far future, perhaps your deathbed or even beyond. Will whatever may be bothering you in the here and now be worth having been bothered by or will it appear irrelevant and petty?</p>
<p>Ultimately most things will be petty at that time scale. Chances are even tomorrow a lot of things which bother you right now will seam not having been worth being bothered by.</p>
<p>In neuro-linguistic programing we have a saying that since in the future you will have put this (negative event) behind you and it will be so small and insignificant do it now. Imagine the event having been a long time ago. Make the image smaller and darker. Associate any sounds with it softer and put the whole memory behind you and then smile a big smile (at least on the inside) and say to yourself, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be so petty.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yesterday, forth of July, we celebrated the US independence day by having family around and barbecuing. We had three near disasters in the pool as a toddler dived to the side and nearly hit the pool wall, some one slipped in the wet and fell and hurt herself and I walked backward into a cactus plant (thank God it was a money tree and had big needles which went in and came out &#8211; and perhaps it&#8217;s a good omen)&#8230;</p>
<p>So after the three close calls everything negative seamed ever so petty. It should not take near disasters to appreciate the beauty of your life and how you can be happy by being in touch with your real self over your false ego.</p>
